Things That Go Bump on the Eve

Who Needs a Ball?
Times Square does its thing and many cities and towns across the country do theirs: Harrisburg, a Strawberry; Raleigh, an Acorn; Dillsburg a Pickle; and Atlanta, a Peach.
We could also drop gum or the other shoe or dead gorgeouses.
If there are other things to ring in the new year, please drop us a line.
Miami lifts up an orange and we like that idea. We are nothing if not open about our citruses. We also like the idea of lemons.
A lemon drop or two on New Year’s Eve or thereabouts. Happy New Year!
Out of Kilter
First find this morning: a green chewing gum medallion: resembles Chinese character or trigram.
Then, a little – inch long- indigo blue soft rubber frog.
The creek is swollen. I feel out of kilter.
Platoon of Canada geese waiting to become a flotilla. They seem lemming-esque, lemming-like in their approach to the creek.
The creek is full to overflowing. An 8:02 bluebird.
First heron near the eight marker seems big, even bigger because the water is so big. A dozen seagulls swarm and swoop over the middle of the creek.
Second heron upstream a bit, also on the far side, also “Big.” Zero human traffic. At the far parking lot a blue Explorer with a Marines Semper Fi licence plate holder; two bugs, one red and one orange, parked next to each other and facing opposite directions. Head out; head in. Find a discarded ATM receipt to make notes.
The next two herons are standing where the creek has overstepped its bounds. Both on the far side.
Returning at the red covered bridge. On the near side is a feathery heron. The light grey and the dark grey are pronounced. The snaky neck , the knife bill.
Most of these things go into the Sudoku re:bus. The scanner is out of kilter since the power out. Fixed. Voilà.

Dear Sole Engineer,

Print Me
Do you design the bottoms of shoes, the tops of soles? Prints on the snow-coated path Monday morning. They must be yours. Inspected by # and packed with pride. Shipped safely and sold. Makes life better. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Sizzyphus
p.s. Slow day for herons.

Making tracks
Green, Gray, Brown and White
Snow mixed with rain Sunday morning, ending by 10 AM. All quiet on the trail. No spotted heron, no heron spotted until near the seven marker: a squawk as it alit near the edge of the creek at the picnic grove bend. Then it stood in pennant formation. The prints in the sudoku on the right side are the web feet.

- The Better Late Than Never/Better Luck Next Time organization: BLTN/BLNT
- The Society for the Advancement of Squirrels
- The Putting On of the Wreath Club
- Book of Pink
- Palisades Castle No Stop Pavers Unlimited
- Flea Market Junkie groupies, attic addicts
- Grumplestiltskin relief fund
A man on the path today said “I’m OK. It’s the world that’s messed up.”
What part can I take in this, what role can I fulfill? What missionary position works best?
On the Snow Path
Snow producing little accumulation. Lots of patterns.
Reverse Rohrshach. One heron flying.
Sweet 16th

December Sweet 16th
The sugar plum fairy is getting to my sweet tooth.
Swollen to twice its normal size Sunday and Monday and racing fast, the creek was rushing less this morning as sleet began to develop.
On Sunday two ducks were joyriding the currents at the stone bridge and the word must have spread because next day several gaggles of geese waited in line in the meadow to get into the creek, like people at an amusement park queuing up for the super water rides.
A raccoon crossed the path yesterday at 9:50 a.m. in the fifty to sixty degree weather and only three other people early on the trail today.
Many herons today. On Sunday they were all posing with a kind of over- the-shoulder artist’s model come hither look.Today they were elongated, stretched tall. One was on a rock that was submerged yesterday, so the water level has returned to normalcy. Also on Sunday was a trail of red jelly beans and foil wrapped chocolates leading from the seasonal train display. It seemed to me Hansel and Gretal had been there but had run out of bread crumbs.
