Today is national bittersweet chocolate with almonds day and that sounds good if you like that sort of thing. There is not a heron to be seen this morning and when George and I meet, we talk cameras and picture taking. He says that a couple of days ago, he went home to fetch his Canon and came back by bicycle just to capture a digital image of a tree he saw growing out of a rock.
“Do you have your camera with you?” he asks.
”No, I’m sorry to report the lens on my Nikon is dissheveled and a lens error message keeps coming up. George suggests I change the memory card. Taking it to the shop will cost an arm and a leg.
This morning am well served at the grocery store. I drop the kitties’ water bowl which brings an end to an era. It was one of those glass vintage potato chip bowls with colored twine or string around it. Alas. On to the next thing.

Constitution Day by Allison Huyett
We the editors of The Heron Report present the preamble of the United States Constitution and some items donated by the Paper Czar.
Our own day begins with a kind of preamble. We walk along the creek. We come to the studio and office and and convene with our in-house representatives, including the Paper Czar. We make arrangements.
Breakfast is one of the sweet spots of the day. The bakery frequently employs paper bags. We like to read the printing: brand and size at the top, name and date stamp on the bottom. The stamp reveals who made the bag and when. A creators mark! Here is the work of Arias, from June 29, 2009. We wonder what Arias looks like.
From our preamble along the creek, we report one big heron, airborne from a large sycamore. The big bird swoops large, wingspan big as the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Best find: a S U P E R sticker on the bridge Monday morning. Go ahead! Make my day! Humid, morning cool before the big warm-up. Croaking noises from active living breathing herons and and one sentinel.
We have been squirrel fans for a while, now. Has anyone not seen this yet? We encourage you to leave this site at once! But just this once!

nice spot
Neurons happy: Heron on a dead bough: grandaddy of them all, fishing, waiting. View from the road.
Squirrel pops out of a barrel when I make a deposit of litter.
Sunlit scenery. Walk two miles to the eight marker and back, and find a piece of sycamore near the seven. Add the pick of the litter Wonka Nerds box top and voila, today’s rebus. Nerds + give – v = Designer.
Other than that, it’s quiet. Overheard “Research shows…” Something about running half an hour. Meanwhile work on solving world peace. Whose world? Look for the heron on the way back. Might be there. Man and a woman walk with energetic strides and converse in raucous, excited voices, matching in vigor, kind of like the herons make.
Fishing involves patience and timing. Plus location. Pick your spots.

Purple Heart
There must be a God. Today is a four day and purple is the color and relationships are still important and so is creativity and children, there is a squawking heron at the picnic bend area, a wading heron at the Body Zone/overpass bend. In between, find a purple heart barrette, one that is smooth and has silvery glitter inside.
Ron watches the suckers at the bridge while awaiting crew and orders for the day. That’s the name of a big carplike fish, sucker.
A runner says to me: “Boy! I hope it gets more humid today, don’t you?” which makes me laugh.
Two unmarked pickup trucks with asphalt repair apparatus arrived in the parking lot at 7:00 am to seal the cracks. Hot job in the summertime. Lady with the air compressor wears a purple bandana around neck and a Florida baseball cap. We smile.
Red proceeds to power wash the Kubota as I complete my walk. We nod. I got a couple of good pathlings and a bread bag tag 11784. We’ll all need a good shower today.

A little green heron at the locks eludes the trusty lens. This bird is quicker than the eye. Delicate.
While looking for Phillies logo tissue boxes (sold 0ut) at Weis market and Target D”Wyomissing, spotted triangular Kleenex® brand boxes with watermelon and juicy citrus colors. Bought 2. Paid cash. Whoa! $6.34.
New brand with arrow ⁄↑ up & up which I have reorganized and Feng shui placed according to flying star! Up stuff. Go figure! I did it! AH! HA! What a wonderful shelf life. They should notice a jump in sales right away. Wise move.

Ken Reinard, Colonial Angler
There are happiness islands. There are treasure islands.
What is the nickname for Berks County? The Green Diamond! And so it was set, Sunday, with a jewel-tone day at the Heritage Center, happiness and treasures both.
Berks County Parks and Recreation placed the accent on recreation, as park staff, volunteers and presenters beckoned: Step Back in Time. In so doing, some of the past was brought forward, so we may learn, participate and reinterpret.
No doubt, they did it. They did it with songs. They did it with stories. They did it with dress-up and toys and games and arts and crafts. They did it with fashion show. They did it with musketry. They did it with demonstrations.

Colonial Games
All dressed up, with interesting places to go: behind the lines of Civil warfare. On a houseboat named Mildred. Along the banks of the Tulpehocken creek with a colonial angler. It was the perfect day for a date like this, complete with entertainment and refreshments. This week, a review of each.
Special thanks to Berks County Parks and Recreation and the camera shy Ms. Cathy Wegener, Supurrintendent of Interpretive Services.

Sudoku rebus 7.19.09
So reads a strip of paper under the overpass. A signature. Pick of the litter.
When is a tree more like a mushroom? This uprooted, toppled over, sawn to a long stump tree has been left to grow moss and grass. A sculpture, this remnant. Plump mushroom cap and stem.
A heron sounds, satisfying the requirement described in the Peterson Field Guide: Voice: Deep harsh croaks frahnk, frahnk, frahnk.
Heronspotting: One. Location: summit of bare-branched, toppled tree in creek along Tulpehocken Road.
Open conversation of bicyclists: Overheard in Reading
A: ” … asked what his ten year plan was.”
B: “And the response was?”
A: “What ten year plan?”
In the middle of the path in the middle section: sine curves for 1/16 mile. Speak softly and carry a swizzle stick.
Feng shui: It is a ten day! Water.
Also find: 29 sticker and star band aid piece. Tippy top!

Faster Faster
In with the park ranger. Mango seed on balance beams. Fibrous and light yellow. Heron: picture perfect morning. Takes off, glides over the mill bridge, fascinating fisherman with three scissors and me. Turtle trail. Found writing: I love —–
Pathlings aplenty. Capture INXS, now that Nikon released from camera hospital. Trail reports: Mating fish alert. Hawk spotting. Sunning snapping turtle. Result of bat count. Would you like date of the next one? Yes!
Holiday recaps. To do list for today. Starbreaks: so many this week, now Steve McNair. A crime vents. Overheard in Reading: “Faster! Faster!” from two black-clad runners. Bicyclist. Cloth of the man: Habitat for Humanity. [Homes. Recreation areas]. Green sticker w/7 and Chinese calligraphy. Tree. Fisherman still on bridge. Admire his layout without saying anything. Net, cart, ziplock sandwich, bait. Runners rehydrate in lot @ red car.
Orange, white Pixie Stix piece.
